How Is The FIVB World Ranking Determined?

The FIVB World Ranking is a system used to measure the performance of national volleyball teams. It provides an objective way to compare teams based on their results in eligible international competitions. The current system was introduced on 1 February 2020 and uses official match results from 1 January 2019 onward. Unlike a simple ranking based only on wins and losses, the system considers the match result, expected result, and strength of the opponent. (FIVB)

WHAT IS THE FIVB WORLD RANKING?

The FIVB World Ranking is a points based ranking system for national volleyball teams. It is used for senior men's and women's teams as well as several age group categories. The ranking helps provide information about the relative performance of national teams around the world. It can also be used for purposes such as competition seeding and qualification systems. (FIVB)

The system is designed to respond to results rather than remaining unchanged for a long period. Every eligible match can affect a team's ranking points, depending on the result and the circumstances of the match. This means teams can improve or lose their ranking position as they continue competing in international events. (FIVB)

HOW ARE MATCH RESULTS CALCULATED?

The FIVB system does not simply give a fixed number of points for every victory. Before a match, an algorithm calculates the expected probabilities of the possible results based on the teams' current ranking scores and historical match information. In indoor volleyball, the possible results include 3-0, 3-1, 3-2, 2-3, 1-3, and 0-3. The actual result is then compared with the expected result. (FIVB)

If a team performs better than expected, it can gain World Ranking points. If it performs worse than expected, it can lose points. When the actual result is close to what the system expected, the change in ranking points is generally smaller. This approach means that beating a stronger opponent can have a different ranking impact from defeating a team that was already expected to lose. (FIVB)

WHY DOES OPPONENT STRENGTH MATTER?

Opponent strength is an important part of the FIVB World Ranking system. The system considers the ranking scores of both teams when determining what result is expected. A team facing a highly ranked opponent may therefore have a different ranking impact from a team facing a lower ranked opponent. This makes the ranking more sensitive to the quality of competition. (FIVB)

For example, if a lower ranked team defeats a much stronger team, the result can represent a performance above expectations. That can produce a meaningful increase in ranking points. On the other hand, a highly ranked team may lose points if it fails to achieve the result expected from its previous performance. The system therefore considers performance in context, rather than treating every match exactly the same. (FIVB)

DO ALL INTERNATIONAL MATCHES COUNT?

Not every volleyball match automatically contributes to the senior World Ranking. The FIVB includes results from specific World Ranking eligible competitions. These include the Olympic Games and qualification, World Championships and qualification, Volleyball Nations League, Volleyball Challenger Cup, World Cup, continental championships and qualification, and certain recognized international events. (FIVB)

The FIVB has also expanded the types of eligible regional competitions. Under updates introduced in 2025, eligible competitions can include certain annual events organized by continental confederations and zonal associations, provided they meet the FIVB requirements, including having at least four senior national teams. This gives more recognized international matches a potential role in the ranking system. (FIVB)

HOW OFTEN DOES THE RANKING CHANGE?

The FIVB World Ranking is designed to be updated after matches, rather than waiting for a fixed annual ranking period. Once an eligible match is completed, its result can change the ranking scores of the participating teams. The new scores can then affect the ranking positions of teams around them. (FIVB)

The FIVB has also provided tools that show how many ranking points can potentially be gained or lost before a match. These calculations depend on the teams' current ranking scores and the possible match results. After the match, the actual result determines the ranking points that are applied. (FIVB)

HOW DOES A TEAM GAIN OR LOSE POINTS?

A team can gain World Ranking points when its performance exceeds the result expected by the ranking system. The amount depends on factors including the expected outcome and the actual result. A team can also lose points when it performs below expectations. Therefore, simply winning a match does not always mean that a team will gain the same number of ranking points every time. (FIVB)

The score of the match also matters because the system distinguishes between different winning and losing results. For example, a 3-0 victory and a 3-2 victory are treated as different outcomes in the calculation. This makes individual sets relevant to the ranking rather than looking only at the final winner. (FIVB)

WHAT COMPETITIONS HAVE THE MOST IMPORTANCE?

The World Ranking includes several major international competitions, but their results are not necessarily treated identically. The system uses factors such as the competition and its Match Weight Factor when determining the impact of eligible results. This means the competition context is part of the ranking calculation. (FIVB)

Major events such as the Olympic Games, World Championships, and Volleyball Nations League are included among the competitions that contribute to the ranking. Continental and certain recognized international competitions can also contribute when they meet the eligibility requirements. The system therefore combines results from different levels of international volleyball. (FIVB)

WHY IS THE FIVB WORLD RANKING IMPORTANT?

The FIVB World Ranking provides a mathematical and merit based method for comparing national teams. It can be used as part of qualification and seeding procedures for FIVB competitions. For example, the FIVB's qualification system for the Los Angeles 2028 Olympic Games includes World Ranking as one of the qualification pathways. (FIVB)

The ranking also helps fans and volleyball organizations follow changes in team performance. Because results can affect points immediately, teams have opportunities to change their position through future performances. The system therefore reflects an ongoing competition between national teams rather than being based only on a single tournament. (FIVB)

CONCLUSION

The FIVB World Ranking is determined through a dynamic points based system that considers match results, expected outcomes, opponent strength, and the importance of eligible competitions. A team can gain or lose points depending on whether its actual performance is better or worse than what the system expected. Different results such as 3-0, 3-1, and 3-2 can therefore have different effects on ranking points. (FIVB)

In simple terms, the FIVB World Ranking measures how national teams perform against their opponents over eligible international matches. Because the system is updated as results occur, the ranking can change throughout the international volleyball season.
