Why Is KUR BRI Popular for Supporting UMKM Business Capital?

Many UMKM (Micro, Small, and Medium Enterprises) need additional capital to maintain daily operations, purchase equipment, increase inventory, or expand their businesses. However, access to financing can still be a challenge, especially for business owners who have limited assets or have not previously used formal banking services. This is one reason why Kredit Usaha Rakyat (KUR) BRI remains a popular financing option for productive businesses in Indonesia.

KUR BRI is designed to provide financing for productive and feasible businesses that may have limited or insufficient additional collateral. In 2026, BRI reported that it had distributed Rp103.81 trillion in KUR to around 2 million debtors by the end of June, showing the significant demand for this financing program.

ACCESSIBLE FINANCING FOR UMKM

One major reason KUR BRI is popular is its focus on improving access to business financing for productive UMKM. The program is intended for businesses that are considered feasible and productive, even when their additional collateral is limited or insufficient. This makes KUR different from financing products that may require stronger collateral conditions. BRI currently provides KUR options for different business scales, including KUR Super Mikro, KUR Mikro, and KUR Kecil.

The financing can be used for important business purposes such as working capital and investment. Working capital can help businesses purchase stock, raw materials, or support daily operations, while investment financing can support the purchase of production equipment or business expansion. Therefore, KUR BRI can be relevant for UMKM owners who need capital to keep their businesses running and growing.

COMPETITIVE INTEREST RATES

Another factor behind the popularity of KUR BRI is its relatively affordable interest structure compared with many ordinary commercial loans. BRI's current information states that KUR Super Mikro has a rate of 3% effective per year, while KUR Mikro and KUR Kecil have rates starting from 6% effective per year, subject to applicable provisions and borrower conditions.

A more affordable financing cost can help UMKM manage their monthly cash flow more carefully. Business owners can allocate a larger portion of their revenue to inventory, operations, marketing, or other productive needs instead of using too much money for financing costs. However, applicants should still calculate their repayment ability before borrowing because low interest does not eliminate the obligation to repay the loan.

FLEXIBLE PLAFOND FOR DIFFERENT BUSINESS NEEDS

KUR BRI is also attractive because the available financing can accommodate different levels of business needs. BRI lists KUR Super Mikro with financing up to Rp10 million, KUR Mikro from above Rp10 million to Rp100 million, and KUR Kecil from above Rp100 million to Rp500 million.

This range allows business owners to choose financing that is more appropriate for their business scale and capital requirements. A small business that only needs additional working capital does not necessarily have to apply for a large loan. Meanwhile, a more established business may require greater financing for business expansion or investment. The appropriate financing amount should always be based on realistic business needs and repayment capacity.

SUPPORT FOR PRODUCTIVE BUSINESS SECTORS

KUR BRI is not limited to one particular type of business. According to BRI, KUR can support productive sectors such as agriculture, fisheries, livestock, plantations, manufacturing, construction, tourism, services, and trade. This broad sector coverage is important because Indonesian UMKM operate across many different industries and have different capital requirements.

The strong demand for KUR can also be seen from its distribution across productive sectors. By the end of June 2026, agriculture accounted for 42.68% of BRI's KUR distribution, while trade accounted for 32.34%. This indicates that KUR is being used to support businesses that are closely connected with economic activity and community needs.

AVAILABLE FOR BUSINESSES THAT MEET THE REQUIREMENTS

Although KUR is designed to expand financing access, applicants still need to meet specific eligibility requirements. BRI's current information states that prospective KUR borrowers generally need to have a productive and feasible business, with the business operating for at least six months. BRI also lists requirements involving business identification and credit history, including NIB and NPWP and the absence of negative SLIK records under the applicable criteria.

These requirements are important because KUR is still a form of bank financing, not free business assistance. Applicants should prepare valid identity and business documents and provide accurate information about their business. A clear record of sales, expenses, cash flow, and business activity can also help applicants explain their financing needs more convincingly when the bank evaluates the application.

KUR BRI CAN HELP BUSINESSES GROW

Business capital is not only useful for covering short-term expenses. When used productively, financing can help an UMKM increase inventory, purchase better equipment, improve production capacity, or reach new customers. For this reason, KUR BRI can become a tool for business development, provided the borrowed funds are used according to the intended purpose.

The scale of BRI's KUR distribution also illustrates the program's role in supporting UMKM. BRI reported that KUR distribution reached Rp103.81 trillion for 2 million debtors by the end of June 2026, with the financing distributed across various regions in Indonesia. Proper use of financing can therefore help businesses strengthen their operations, improve productivity, and gradually build stronger financial capacity.

WHY RESPONSIBLE USE OF KUR MATTERS?

The popularity of KUR BRI should not be interpreted as a reason to borrow as much as possible. The most important consideration is whether the financing amount matches the actual business requirement and repayment ability. Borrowed funds should ideally be directed toward productive activities that can generate revenue rather than unnecessary personal spending.

UMKM owners should also prepare a realistic repayment plan before applying. Reviewing monthly revenue, operating expenses, existing obligations, and expected business income can help prevent excessive financial pressure. Responsible borrowing allows KUR to function as productive business capital, rather than becoming a financial burden.

CONCLUSION

KUR BRI is popular among UMKM because it combines accessible financing, competitive rates, different financing levels, and broad support for productive business sectors. Its purpose is to help feasible businesses obtain capital for working capital and investment, including businesses that have limited additional collateral.

The program's large distribution also demonstrates its importance in Indonesia's UMKM financing ecosystem. However, business owners should understand the requirements, calculate their repayment capacity, and use the funds for productive purposes before applying. With careful planning and responsible management, KUR BRI can become a useful source of capital for strengthening and expanding an UMKM business.
