Jakarta has consistently recorded one of the highest minimum wages in Indonesia. As the country’s economic and business center, Jakarta offers higher salary standards due to its expensive living costs, dense population, and strong industrial activity.
However, several surrounding cities and industrial regions now offer minimum wages that are equal to or even higher than Jakarta’s wage level.
JAKARTA’S MINIMUM WAGE IN 2026
The Jakarta provincial minimum wage (UMP) for 2026 was officially set at approximately Rp5.73 million per month, an increase of 6.17% from the previous year.
This wage level remains the highest provincial minimum wage in Indonesia.
CITIES WITH HIGHER OR SIMILAR WAGES
Several industrial cities around Jakarta have even higher city minimum wages (UMK).
1.BEKASI
Bekasi currently has one of the highest minimum wages in Indonesia, reaching nearly Rp6 million in 2026. The city is a major manufacturing and industrial hub with many automotive, electronics, and logistics companies.
2.KARAWANG
Karawang Regency also offers very competitive salaries because of its large industrial estates and international factories. Its minimum wage is reported to be higher than Jakarta’s provincial wage.
3.BATAM
Batam is another city known for relatively high wages due to its international trade and manufacturing sectors. Many multinational companies operate there, especially in electronics and shipbuilding industries.
4.SURABAYA
Surabaya has one of the strongest economies outside Jakarta. The city’s industrial growth, ports, and business sector contribute to competitive worker salaries.
COMPARISON WITH CENTRAL JAVA CITIES
Cities in Central Java generally have lower minimum wages than Jakarta because living expenses are more affordable.
For example:
- Semarang and surrounding regions have wages significantly below Jakarta
- Many Central Java areas still range around Rp2–3 million monthly
- Industrial areas may offer slightly higher wages than rural regions
Jakarta’s wage level can be more than double compared to some smaller cities in Central Java.
WHY JAKARTA HAS HIGH WAGES
Several factors explain why Jakarta maintains high minimum wages:
- High cost of living
- Expensive housing and transportation
- Large business concentration
- Strong labor demand
- International investment presence
- Higher operational costs for companies
Although salaries are higher, daily expenses in Jakarta are also much more expensive than in smaller cities.
IS JAKARTA’S MINIMUM WAGE ENOUGH?
Many workers believe Jakarta’s minimum wage can cover basic living expenses, but it may still feel limited for a more comfortable lifestyle. Discussions among workers online often suggest that living comfortably in Jakarta usually requires income above the minimum wage.
Fresh graduates and entry-level workers commonly start with salaries near the minimum wage, especially in formal sectors.
CONCLUSION
Jakarta remains one of Indonesia’s highest-paying regions in terms of minimum wages. However, industrial cities such as Bekasi and Karawang now offer salaries that can exceed Jakarta’s wage level. While higher wages attract job seekers, the capital’s living costs also remain among the most expensive in the country.
Workers considering relocation should compare both salary levels and living expenses before deciding where to work.
